Type of Work: Under general direction, maintains, replaces, and rebuilds portions of the piers and docks; replaces piles, caps, stringers, and decking; uses heavy equipment and various devices related to heavy construction and repair; constructs and maintains shore side facilities; performs crane mounted dredging; supervises others and performs other duties as required. Reads plans, orders materials and at times acts as department supervisor in the absence of Facility Supervisor.
KNOWLEDGE OF: Heavy construction, equipment, and materials usage; safe working rules and practices; pier design and construction; use of hand and power tools; principles of supervision; basic carpentry, masonry, plumbing, electrical, concrete and asphalt construction techniques and systems; and heavy equipment operation and maintenance.
ABILITY TO: Operate and maintain heavy equipment; supervise and work with a crew involved in heavy construction in a safe manner; plan, organize, and direct the work of others; swim; apply knowledge of construction trades in carrying out the maintenance and construction of Port facilities; lift heavy timbers and utilize tools and equipment in close quarters; work under adverse weather conditions; and read and interpret construction plans; communicate effectively both orally and in writing; work cooperatively with a diverse group of patrons, lease operators, District employees and members of the public.
Desirable Education and Experience:
High school graduation and four years of heavy construction experience including the operation of heavy equipment preferably in wharf or pier construction and maintenance; or any combination of education and/or experience that could likely provide the desired knowledge and abilities.
Special Requirements:
Valid California Driver's License; possession of, or ability to obtain and maintain within one year of appointment, crane operator certification and certification as a hazardous materials first responder. Work nights, weekends and holidays on occasion, and return to work after hours when requested.
Physical Demands and Working Conditions:
Strenuous physical work with continuous exposure to unpleasant elements such as: dust, fumes and odors, dampness, raw or treated sewage, noise levels, or outside weather conditions. Physical demands include: frequent lifting of objects over 50 pounds, often combined with bending and twisting, working above and below ground, climbing ladders, and walking on irregular surfaces. Must have correctable vision sufficient to safely walk construction sites, including areas of uneven ground and raised scaffolding. Must have sufficient hearing to understand verbal instructions, communicate via VHF radios and hear and understand audible emergency warnings.
